Visual Story Telling is one of the most important skills a DP can have. Explore this process with acclaimed cinematographer, Jaems Grant ACS in a one-day Intensive. Based on a single scene, Jaems will challenge participants to help him tell the story through composition and lighting. He is simply a master at using the cast, props and set to frame and light a series of shots that conveys the story… or creates ambiguity, if that is the intention.
This workshop will include practical examples of film lighting and camera movement. If you’re an emerging DP, Jaems and his gaffer will help you learn how to light similar scenarios; and he will demonstrate options for camera movement, choosing the right method and executing it with the Key Grip.
A professional DP needs to be capable of working quickly on a set to complete a scene in the allotted time. Understanding how to work with the director and cast to break down the scripted scene into shots that make sense and cut together is paramount to the DP’s success. Lighting the scene for look and feel of the narrative is also covered in this Intensive. Don’t fall short in this essential skill.
ShotClass Cinematography Intensives are run like professional film sets. Camera, lighting and grip equipment is all top level as found on current film sets. Crew will include a professional Camera Assistant, Gaffer and Grip and their gear, along with a coordinator and support crew.

Jaems is an award-winning Australian cinematographer, accredited by the Australian Cinematographers Society. If you’re wondering, yes, that is how Jaems spells his name despite many attempts by auto-correct to change it. Like his name, Jaems takes a different and refreshing approach to cinematography. His passion is hard to contain, not that you’d want to. On a film set or in an Intensive, Jaems gives 110%. For ShotClass participants, he explains his methods and backs them up with perfect examples. He will involve the class to try things out for themselves and discover how those ideas work or could be improved. Jaems will share stories from set with alarming honesty, depicting his successes and failures and how he learned from all of them. There won’t be a shortage of humour, either. By the end of the day, attendees will be buzzing with enthusiasm and armed with useful knowledge, ready to take on their next scene with greater skill and competence.
