A rare opportunity. Spend two full days with master cinematographer, Peter James ACS ASC as he takes you through setting up and shooting a variety of scenes. The masterclass will take place both Interior and Exterior at practical locations and will include day and night interiors and a night exterior. Exactly how does a master of cinematography film a scene? Peter’s creative mind will see opportunity that drives those choices. That is the gift of the cinematographer’s eye. You will be a part of the decision-making process and learn how to consider all options – and then choose one. With him you will explore composition and lighting. Two simple words for a million ideas.

Peter enjoys working with light sources that are not always electrically powered, so you can expect to see expert use of practical lighting sources on some of the darker scenes. Of course, he will have his gaffer and their equipment at hand to build and augment the lighting of the scenes as required. Learn how Peter uses lens lengths, perspective, colour, light, contrast, tone and texture to tell the story.

Additionally, we will look at breaking down the scene to discuss and demonstrate coverage, shot matching, scene continuity, lens choices and angles, working with the director and working with cast. Peter has completed 11 films with director Bruce Beresford and he will talk about that relationship and how they collaborate. Lens packages will include both spherical and anamorphic lenses, the latter for which Peter is renowned as a leading authority. Well known for staying up-to-date with the latest equipment and processes, Peter will show how he makes the most of technological advancements in our industry, and applies them with his depth of knowledge and experience. He is often the cinematographer manufacturers call on to test their new camera or lenses. He has a strong technical understanding of cinematography.

This masterclass will be supplied with ARRI cameras and top quality lens packages. It will be fully crewed with professional Gaffer, Grip and Camera crew, along with stand-by props and SFX. We will also work with professional cast on set. ShotClass always aims to recreate a true set-like environment for its events so you, the participant, can get the most realistic experience to take away from the classes. Skills learnt here can be implemented on your next shoot.
