ShotClass is excited to announce a very special masterclass with one of Australia’s most respected and highly regarded cinematographers, Bonnie Elliott ACS. This has been some time coming, as we have tried to squeeze into Bonnie’s busy shooting schedule.

This is your rare chance to spend a day with Bonnie as she shares her incredible work ethic and approaches to filming across disciplines as diverse as video art to documentary to narrative drama and TVCs. And she has been awarded in all of them. If you have been fortunate enough to see her work on Stephen Page’s Spear for the Bangarra Dance Company, you will know why she drew so much early attention. Her stunning visual style has been the hallmark of her success as a prolific DP in constant demand and respected by her peers both in Australia and Internationally. Bonnie manages to install art into everything she shoots, and combined with her technical prowess, she achieves enviable outcomes we should all aspire to.

Does this sound like you?

  • Cinematography Student, ready to take the next big step to launch their career
  • Emerging or Early-Career Cinematographer
  • Experienced DP wanting to expand your skillset and genre repertoire
  • Camera Operator or Camera Assistant, thinking about beginning to shoot more
  • Film crew member wanting to learn more about cinematography

ShotClass offer these opportunities to allow you advance your career with ‘in person’ masterclasses and to have direct interaction with some of our industry legends. We believe this is the most effective way to learn when practical aspects are involved and nuance is essential.

Bonnie Elliott ACS

Bonnie will discuss her methods from landing the job, to camera and lens choices, her ‘Bonnie’ lens testing practice, crewing, pre-production planning, her thorough research into each project’s subject matter, actually shooting the project, collaborating with the director, leadership as head of department and right through to colour grading to maintain the integrity of the cinematography.

She will be assisted by her crew including professional gaffer and 1st AC and support crew as she sets up and shoots some sample scenarios with actors. She will demonstrate use of expressive lighting techniques and visual story telling. There will be elements of participation by some attendees to allow you to assess your thinking process in a shot challenge. Questions are most welcome.

The camera kit will comprise an ARRI Alexa 35 production camera kit with a mixed selection of lenses so Bonnie can show what she looks for both in testing and shooting from her camera package. It will be perfect blend of technical vs artistic discussions and demonstrations that Bonnie is renowned for.

It is a wonderful opportunity having access to extraordinary DPs like Bonnie, and face-to-face time with her to discuss her processes. You rarely get the chance to learn from cinematographers of this calibre – don’t try to figure it out on your own by trial and error. Get a jump ahead in this special masterclass.

Take advantage of this chance to meet and talk with Bonnie who enthusiastically shares her knowledge with everyone. Bonnie is behind the ACS initiative “Who’s On Your Crew?”, which addresses diversity in the camera department.

ShotClass is committed to providing a welcoming experience and access to events for everyone, regardless of your skill level, experience or needs. This includes physical venue access and consideration for people from diverse and marginalised groups as well as people with disabilities. As far as practicable, we take into account the special requirements of our participants and providers.

After the masterclass, you are invited to join us for a mixer in a bar where you can share your thoughts, meet with others and ask Bonnie questions more informally. It’s great way to relax after the day. (*Subject to Bonnie’s schedule)
